What does Love mean ?

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, “What does love mean ?” The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined :

  “When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend – over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” Rebecca- age 8

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry”

A number of Primary Schools were doing a project on “The Sea”. Kids were asked to draw pictures or write about their experiences. Teachers got together to compare the results and put together the comments that were funny and sad. Here are some of them. The kids were all aged between 5 and 8 years.

Grammar (Time, one hour)

Also notice that the exam took five hours to complete.

Báo động tình trạng học văn của học sinh

Thân thể người lái đò rất tráng lệ ; Nguyễn Tuân rất hung bạo… là những câu trong bài thi tuyển sinh ĐH, CĐ vừa qua. Nhiều giáo viên chấm văn nhận xét, mỗi năm bài làm của học sinh lại kém hơn một chút. Có những lỗi sai không thể chấp nhận được, có những bài thi giám khảo không sao đọc được, có những câu văn của học sinh, giám khảo ôm bụng cười tới năm phút sau mới chấm tiếp được.

Một giảng viên văn ở Hà Nội, sau chấm thi môn văn kỳ tuyển sinh đại học, cao đẳng vừa qua, đã đưa ra nhiều dẫn chứng cụ thể.

“Thân thể ông lái đò hết sức tráng lệ”( !)

Ở đây chúng tôi không đề cặp đến những trường hợp khó viết đúng chính tả như : truyện ngắn, câu chuyện …(những lỗi này thì nhiều vô kể), nhưng những lỗi sau đây, theo chúng tôi, là không thể tha thứ được.

  Xuống dòng, chữ đầu dòng không viết hoa.

  Tên riêng của người không viết hoa. Ví du : huy cận, nguyễn tuân…

  Cả bài viết không có dấu câu nào.

  Những từ đơn giản thông thường không viết đúng chính tả : lo nắng, í tưởng, Việt lam, đoạn quối truyện…

Chúng tôi cũng không cần bàn tới chuyện học sinh phải dùng từ cho đúng phong cách, dùng những từ thật “đắt” mà chỉ dùng từ cho đúng nghĩa. Học sinh rất hay nhầm lẫn những từ có âm gần giống nhau. Ví dụ :

  Thân thể ông lái đò rất tráng lệ (phải chăng học sinh định viết là cường tráng ?).

  Cách dùng từ của Huy Cận rất thuần tuý (phải viết là tinh tuý).

  Những cánh đồng được phù sa bồi đắp trở nên rất phù du, màu mỡ (phải viết là phì nhiêu).

  Ở giai đoạn này ý chí của người dân đang ở mức tuột đỉnh (tột đỉnh).

  Đoạn thơ thể hiện sự vui sướng, hí hửng của tác giả (hớn hở).

  Qua tác phẩm người lái đò sông Đà em rất ngưỡng mộ những cuộc giao hữu của ông lái đò với sông Đà (giao chiến chăng ?).

  Nhan đề bài thơ tiếng hát con tàu của Chế Lan Viên có ý nghĩa rất sâu cay (sâu sắc).

Rất nhiều trường hợp học sinh dùng từ sai, song chúng tôi cũng không biết học sinh định diễn đạt cái gì và thay thế bằng từ gì :

  Đó là một cụm từ gợi cho ta nỗi buồn, nó bê tha đến nhường nào.

  Nguyễn Tuân là một nhà văn cổ kính.

” Nguyễn Tuân rất hung bạo” ?!

Có thể kể ra vô vàn những câu văn của học sinh mà người đọc không thể hiểu nổi học sinh đó muốn viết gì. Điều này chứng tỏ học sinh rất lơ mơ về kiến thức ngữ pháp tiếng Việt, đồng thời cũng chứng tỏ tư duy cũng hết sức rối rắm. Có những giáo viên khi chấm bài đã không thể chịu đựng được đã phê : “Thần kinh không bình thường”. Xin kể vài trường hợp :

  Từ lâu đến nay nói tới con sông Đà nhớ ngay tới Nguyễn Tuân vì Nguyễn Tuân có lúc rất hung bạo, một mình ông cũng ngồi trên một chuyến để lái đò và ông cứ xoáy sâu vào hình tượng sông Đà.

  Trong nền văn học Việt Nam thì có rất nhiều nhà văn mà chúng ta được biết thì chúng ta không thể nói hết về nhà văn nhà thơ được mà Nguyễn Tuân là một nhà văn rất quen thuộc với bao cô cậu học trò cũng đang in rõ sâu trong lòng nhà thơ.

Cần phải nhìn nhận một thực tế bây giờ là rất ít học sinh viết rung động đối với bài thơ hay, câu văn đẹp. Vì vậy khi viết văn các em toàn diễn xuôi hoặc “thô thiển hoá” văn chương. Một bài thơ hay, sau khi được các em phân tích, bình giảng bỗng trở nên một thứ ngớ ngẩn, không thể nào chấp nhận được, đọc mà nhiều lúc phát tức. Chúng ta hãy nghe thử một số lời bình sau đây :

  Lời bình câu thơ : Sau lưng thềm nắng lá rơi đầy.
Cảnh đông tàn rét mướt khiến cho con người không muốn quét tước gì nữa, để rồi sau khi nắng lên, sau lưng thềm lá đã rụng đầy như một bãi rác.

  Lời bình câu thơ : Mùa thu nay khác rồi.
Đấy mới hôm nào đấy quay về thì phong cảnh ở đây đã khác rồi, không ai đoán trước được chữ ngờ.

  Lời bình câu thơ : Lơ thơ cồn nhỏ gió đìu hiu.
Mở đầu bài thơ tác giả đưa ngay ra một cái cồn nhỏ. Cồn của người khác thì rậm rạp còn cồn của Huy Cận thì lơ thơ vài loại cây. Cây cối của Huy Cận chỉ đủ dùng cho một luồng gió.

  Lời bình câu thơ : Sông dài, trời rộng, bến cô liêu.
“Bến cô liêu” thì có nghĩa cô liêu là tên của một bến đò. Và “Cô” ở đây chỉ cô gái đứng cô đơn một mình.

Còn đây là một cách mở bài rất điệu đàng và hoa mỹ : Mỗi khi nghe tiếng sóng dữ dội đập vào bờ biển đầy rẫy những hòn đá là em lại chợt rùng mình trong lòng như tê tái có một điều gì đó làm em lo sợ. Đúng rồi, đó là tiếng sóng dữ dội mà ông lái đò từng trải qua mà em đã từng được học trên lớp.

Nếu nói văn là người thì qua những câu văn vừa rồi, bạn sẽ hình dung một lớp người như thế nào ? Thật là lạ, lớp người ấy vừa đỗ tú tài ! Làm sao đây để học sinh thích học môn văn ?
